The power of electricity is undeniable, and it’s no surprise that three-phase power supplies are increasingly being used in industrial, commercial, and even residential applications. But what exactly is the voltage in a three-phase power supply? What are the differences between single-phase and three-phase power supplies, and what advantages does a three-phase system have? The most basic understanding of voltage in a three-phase system is that it is an alternating current (AC) electrical power system, in which three “phases” of power are distributed at different times. The power is then combined and sent across a single conductor - the neutral - to create a single combined electrical output. The voltage applied to each of the three phases will vary depending on the configuration of the system, but there are some generalities that can be applied.

There are two primary types of voltage configurations for a three-phase system - Delta and Wye. In a Delta configuration, each phase of the power supply has its own separate voltage source, usually 120 volts. When these three separate sources are combined, the total voltage of the system is 240 volts. On the other hand, in a Wye configuration, the voltage of each phase is not equal, but is instead 120/208 volts. When the three phases are combined, the total voltage of the system is 277 volts.
