How To Change A Broken Sprinkler Pipe

By | January 12, 2023

When the weather outside is hot and dry, it can be difficult to keep your lawn healthy and green without a functioning sprinkler system. Unfortunately, the pipes in your sprinkler system may become cracked or broken at some point, leading to significant water loss and a less-than-lush landscape. But don’t panic! With the right tools and a few steps, you can easily replace a broken sprinkler pipe and keep your lawn looking great.

Repairing a broken sprinkler pipe is something that any homeowner can do with the right plan and materials. Whether you’re dealing with a cracked PVC pipe or copper tubing, the same basic principles apply. You’ll need to first turn off the water supply and disconnect the existing pipes. Next, you’ll need to measure the new pipe and cut it to size. Finally, you’ll join the new pipe to the existing pipes and test for leaks before turning the water back on. Let’s take a look at each step in more detail.

Before you begin, it’s important to make sure you have the right supplies. You’ll need a replacement pipe that matches the existing material and size. If you’re using copper, you should also have copper fittings, solder, flux and a soldering torch. For PVC, you’ll need a pipe cutter, PVC primer and cement. Regardless of the type of pipe, you’ll also need Teflon tape, plumbers tape and a wrench.

Once you have all the necessary supplies, the first step is to turn off the water supply. You can do this at the main shutoff valve near the street or house. After the water is shut off, locate the broken pipe and disconnect it from the other pipes. This may require some digging and you may need to rent a trencher if the pipe is buried deep underground.

Next, measure the new pipe and use a pipe cutter to cut it to size. If you’re working with copper, the ends will need to be deburred and cleaned before joining them to the existing pipes. Now you can connect the new pipe to the existing pipes, using Teflon tape to seal the joints. Wrap the joint with plumber’s tape and tighten the connections with a wrench.

Finally, turn the water back on and test the pipe for leaks. It’s a good idea to check the connections periodically throughout the summer to ensure there are no issues. If you notice any leaking pipes, you’ll need to turn the water off and reconnect them.

Changing a broken sprinkler pipe is a fairly easy process, but if you’re not confident in your DIY skills, you may want to seek professional help. A qualified plumber can fix the issue quickly and safely, so that you can get back to enjoying your beautiful lawn.
