How To Locate A Broken Sprinkler Wire

By | May 7, 2020

One of the most frustrating things about managing a lawn or garden is the occasional broken sprinkler wire, which can cause water to pool in the wrong places and cause costly damage. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to locate the broken wire quickly and efficiently, saving you time, money, and stress.

Finding and repairing a broken sprinkler wire can be daunting if you don’t know where to start. After all, it’s not like you can see the wire itself. But with the right tools and a bit of patience, you can easily locate the break in your sprinkler wiring and get your system running again in no time.

The first step in locating a broken sprinkler wire is to check the sprinkler controller. If the sprinkler controller is not working properly, it may indicate a broken wire somewhere in the system. Look at all the wires connected to the controller and make sure they are securely connected. If any of the wires appear to be loose or damaged, this could be a sign that the wire has been cut or otherwise damaged. If this is the case, you'll need to repair or replace the wire before the rest of the system will work correctly.

Another way to find a broken sprinkler wire is to visually inspect your system. If you can see any breaks in the wire, then the problem is likely localized to that area. Carefully inspect each of the wires and look for any signs of damage. If you do see a break, use a digital multimeter to test the voltage of the wire. This will help you determine whether the wire needs to be repaired or replaced.

In some cases, the break in the sprinkler wire may not be visible. In this situation, you may need to use a special device called an ohm meter. This device is specifically designed to detect electrical currents, so it can be used to pinpoint the exact location of a broken wire. To use an ohm meter, simply attach one end of the meter to the affected wire and then move the other end along the length of the wire until you find an electrical current. When you find the current, you'll know that this is the location of the break.

Once you've located the break in the wire, you can begin to repair or replace it. If the wire is relatively new, it's usually best to replace it with new ones. However, if the wire is older, it may be better to repair it instead. For best results, use a wire splicing tool and heat shrink tubing to properly secure the new wire.

Finally, remember to test the system once the repairs have been completed. This will ensure that the system is working correctly and that the break in the sprinkler wire is completely repaired. Following these steps will help you locate and repair a broken sprinkler wire quickly and easily.
