Having the right tools and materials is essential for any wiring project. You will need a pair of wire strippers, a pair of electrical pliers, a three-way switch, and two electrical cables. Before you begin, turn off the power to the circuit you will be working on. Now you are ready to begin installing your three-way switch.
The first step in installing a three-way switch with two wires is to strip the insulation off the ends of both of your wires. Once you have done this, connect the white wire from one cable to the black from the other, twisting them together tightly and covering the bare metal with electrical tape. This creates your “traveler” wire. Now you can attach the remaining ends of your two cables to the two screws on either side of the three-way switch. These screws are usually labeled as “common” and “traveler”.
Next, you will need to make the connections inside the switch. Most switches have four terminals, two on either side of the switch. The traveler terminal is usually in the middle and will be labeled. Connect the traveler wire to the traveler terminal, and then connect each end of the two remaining wires to the common terminals. Make sure all of your connections are tight and secure.
Finally, install the switch into the wall. Connect the ground wire (usually green) to the ground screw on the switch, and attach the switch plate.
