When it comes to understanding the inner workings of a plug, most of us are in the dark. Despite having seen them hundreds of times, it’s easy to take for granted exactly what goes into supplying power to our electronic devices. Underneath the faux-leather exterior of a plug is a complex set of components that work in harmony to make sure that we get the electricity we need. Most plugs have three wires – one for the neutral connection, one for the live connection, and one for the earth connection. In this article, we'll explore the purpose of these three wires and how they work together to power our everyday devices.
At its core, a plug is an electrical device used to make a connection between two components, allowing electric current to flow. It is composed of two main parts – the body, which contains the socket and the pins, and the pins themselves, which are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic and are inserted into the socket. Three wires in a plug, however, serve different purposes – so let's take a closer look at each one.
The first wire is the earth wire. This wire is responsible for grounding the plug and providing an alternate path for any current that may leak from the plug. This ensures that any electrical faults are quickly identified and corrected, preventing shocks, fires, and other accidents that could be caused by unsafe wiring. The earth wire is typically coloured green/yellow or sometimes just yellow.
The second wire is for the neutral connection. This wire carries an alternating current (AC) from the power source back to the wall outlet. It plays a key role in controlling the flow of electricity in the circuit, connecting all the appliances to a single point at the service panel or fuse box. The neutral wire is usually coloured blue.
Finally, the third wire is the live wire. This wire carries the current from the outlet to the appliance, providing the power needed to make it work. The voltage of the live wire is higher than the neutral wire, allowing it to power the device. The live wire is typically coloured brown.
