The concept of three-phase power has been around since the late 1800s, but it wasn't until the invention of the three-phase induction motor in the early 20th century that its potential was truly recognized and further developed. While it may sound complicated, the basic principle is relatively simple and easy to understand. Three-phase power is simply a method of operating an electric motor or generator that uses three alternating currents (AC) of different voltages and frequencies to create a rotating magnetic field. This field induces an electric current in the motor's windings, which then drives the motor.

To explain in more detail, three-phase power typically consists of three phases of power that are generated at separate times. This is done by connecting the power source (generator or transformer) to three individual electrical phases. Each phase produces a different voltage and frequency, while the sum of the three equals the total voltage of the system. The difference in the individual voltages and frequencies, combined with the unique timing of the phases, creates the rotating magnetic field and allows the motor to operate.
