What Is The Difference Between Solder And Flux

By | November 25, 2022

When it comes to joining two pieces of metal together, soldering and flux play an important role. But what is the difference between solder and flux? Solder is actually a combination of metals, most commonly tin and lead, that melts at low temperatures and acts as an adhesive when cooled. Flux is an acid- or water-based chemical which helps to clean the joint before soldering to ensure a secure connection. While they both are necessary for successful soldering, there are some distinct differences between them.

The most obvious difference between solder and flux is in their composition and use. Solder plays the role of the binder between two pieces of metal, while flux does the preparatory work of cleaning the joint prior to soldering. Solder becomes liquid when heated and then hardens when cooled, creating a bond between two metals. On the other hand, flux helps the solder adhere to the two metals by removing any dirt or corrosion on the joint. This allows the solder to make a secure connection. By itself, solder will not create a strong bond between two pieces of metal without the help of flux.
