How To Run Wire A Light Switch

By | April 18, 2020

Running a wire to a light switch is a common task in the home renovation process. However, while it may seem like a simple job, if you don’t know the proper steps, you can find yourself in a dangerous situation. To ensure that you complete this task safely and efficiently, there are several steps that must be followed.

The process of wiring a light switch is not overly complicated, but because of the amount of electricity involved, it should always be done with caution. Before beginning, make sure you have all the necessary materials. This includes the wiring itself, a power drill, wire cutters, and a screwdriver. Additionally, it is also important to be aware of any local laws regarding electrical work. If you are uncertain, it is best to contact a professional electrician to help.

Once you have gathered everything you need, the first step is to shut off the power at the main circuit breaker box. Then locate the existing light switch box and remove the cover. Carefully inspect the wires inside and familiarize yourself with their connections. Take a picture with your smartphone so you can refer to it later if needed. After this, disconnect the wires from the existing switch so they can be reused.

The next step is to run the wiring from the light switch box to the new location. You will need to choose a route for the wiring and mark the holes where the wires will pass through. Once you have done this, use a power drill to create the holes for the wiring. Once all the holes are drilled, the next step is to pull the wire through them. Make sure the wire is secured as you pull it through each hole.

Finally, you can begin the process of connecting the wires to the light switch. Use the screwdriver to attach the wires to the terminals on the back of the switch. It is important to be aware of which wires connect to which terminals, as incorrect connections can be dangerous. Once the wires are properly attached to the switch, you can then install the switch into the wall and secure it with the screws that come with the switch.

Once the switch is installed, you will need to turn the power back on at the main circuit breaker box. When you do this, you can test the switch by flipping it on and off and ensuring that the lights turn on and off accordingly. If so, you have successfully completed the task of running wire to a light switch.
