How To Test Starter Switch On Motorcycle

By | December 28, 2021

It’s no secret that motorcycles are a popular form of transportation. Whether it’s for commuting to work or leisurely rides around town, most riders will eventually come into contact with the starter switch. This piece of machinery, while small and seemingly insignificant, is essential for kicking off your ride every morning. But how do you test if the switch is functioning properly? Knowing how to test your starter switch on your motorcycle is an important part of vehicle maintenance and will ensure a smoother, safer ride.

In order to test the starter switch on your motorcycle, you must first understand its purpose. The starter switch is a safety mechanism that activates when the engine is engaged. It allows a rider to start the engine without putting their hands near the exhaust pipe or other engine parts. To check the starter switch, you’ll need to identify the components and assess their functionality. With the right tools and knowledge, you can make sure that your motorcycle’s starter switch is in proper working order.

The first step in testing your starter switch is to locate the components. On most motorcycles, the starter switch will be located near the throttle. Locate the starter switch wires and then follow them to the ignition switch. The ignition switch should have two wires: a positive (+) and negative (-). If your engine does not have a positive and negative wire, then you’ll need to consult your owner’s manual to determine the correct wiring.

Once you’ve identified the starter switch wires, you can begin to test the switch itself. Start by turning the ignition key to the “on” position. You should be able to hear a clicking sound when you turn the key. If there’s no sound, then the starter switch isn’t working properly.

If the starter switch is clicking but the engine isn’t starting, then you’ll need to further inspect the switch. Unplug the starter switch and check the terminals for damage or corrosion. If everything looks good, then plug the switch back in and try to start the engine again. If the engine still won’t start, then it’s time to take a closer look at the starter switch.

Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the starter switch. Start by setting the multimeter to the lowest ohms setting. Connect the red lead to the positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal. If the reading is between 0-3 ohms, then the switch is functioning properly.

Finally, inspect the ground connections. Make sure that the starter switch is securely connected to the frame of the bike, as this can affect the performance of the switch. If the ground connection is loose or corroded, then you’ll need to replace the switch.

Testing the starter switch on your motorcycle is an important part of vehicle maintenance. Knowing how to test the switch will ensure that your engine is starting properly and that you’re able to get out and enjoy your ride safely. With the right tools and knowledge, you can make sure that your starter switch is in proper working order.
